Could Aterian Have One Of The Smartest Small-Cap Mining Funding Strategies ?
“…We’re building out a portfolio across three jurisdictions – Morocco, Rwanda and Botswana. We want to be able to announce that we’ve engaged either in the development of one of our assets or another major joint venture. As well as being an exploration company we’ve also launched a trading business…”
For many junior explorers, the biggest challenge isn’t finding mineral deposits – it’s finding enough cash to keep drilling without repeatedly asking shareholders for more money.
That’s the issue Aterian plc is trying to solve.
During 2026, the African-focused critical minerals company has continued to develop its exploration portfolio across Morocco, Rwanda and Botswana, but perhaps the biggest operational story has been the rapid progress of its metals trading business.
Executive Chairman Charles Bray believes the strategy is beginning to demonstrate exactly why management diversified beyond exploration.
“We’re building out a portfolio across three jurisdictions – Morocco, Rwanda and Botswana,” he said. “As well as being an exploration company… we’ve launched a trading business. That trading business is getting some real traction and allowing us to produce approximately $100,000 per month on a run rate.”
For retail investors, that matters because management’s long-term objective is straightforward: fund exploration through operating cash flow rather than continual equity placings.
Bray believes the growing trading division will provide the flexibility to advance projects while reducing future shareholder dilution.
Rwanda has become the centrepiece of that strategy.
Following several years of exploration, the company is now combining its mineral interests with an active tantalum and niobium trading operation. The trading licence is already operational, with additional suppliers expected to contribute during the second half of the year.
“The licence has already been activated and it’s producing some really good revenue numbers,” Bray said.
Financially, management says the business is approaching an important inflection point. The trading operation is currently generating annualised revenues of between US$1.2 million and US$1.5 million, with ambitions to increase that to US$2.5 million-US$3 million as new supply agreements come on stream.
“For us, that supports the entire organisation from an operational standpoint,” Bray explained, adding that more advanced discussions are also taking place with potential partners interested in funding development across Aterian’s exploration portfolio.
Investors may have noticed that second-quarter gross profit softened compared with the first quarter, but Bray was keen to stress this reflected weaker tantalum prices rather than any deterioration in the underlying business.
“Gross margin did not deteriorate, product mix did not deteriorate, and terms and volumes did not deteriorate. They actually all improved,” he said, explaining that lower market prices temporarily affected reported profitability.
Alongside the financial progress, Aterian continues to advance its exploration assets. The company is working towards converting its Rwandan licences into full-scale mining licences, while preparing drilling programmes in Botswana and continuing community engagement across its operating jurisdictions.
For shareholders, the key question now is whether the trading business can continue scaling quickly enough to generate sustainable cash flow while unlocking value from the exploration portfolio. If management delivers on those ambitions, Aterian could increasingly stand apart from many junior explorers by combining operational growth with a reduced dependence on equity funding.
As Charles explains to Sarah Lowther in this video interview by the end of the year investors should be expecting some ‘exceptional’ news. “We want to be able to announce that we’ve engaged either in the development of one of our assets or another major joint venture to really get the exploration side of things up and running.”
